The different programs are often named things as: M, P, S and A. But for most amateurs this is just codes, right?
M is the manual program were you need to do it all by yourself. Both the aperture value and the shutterspeed, so this is kind of hard. If even this was a kind of greek, lets just use the others.

The most basic is ofcourse green circle (Auto), this program is the one for you who don´t know much about the advanced settings, but wants to capture the nice motives. Whit the "A" program you will allmost allways get the flash to fire, whitch is positive in dark settings, but sometimes its just too much.
For the more advanced users of digital cameras the "P" (Program) is better to use. Here you got some options, and best of all you may not need the blitz.
Canon also have the "TV" and "AV" settings. These are 50% auto. In TV mode you choose the shutter-speed and the camera knows a good aperture value to combine with you´re other choices. Here you have to set ISO and white-balance yourselves. In the AV mode you set the aperture value and the camera chooses the shutter-speed. These two programs are very much the same. In these programs you can set white-balance(WB) and ISO manually.
The most used program for the pros are the manual program. Here you got to do it all on you´re own.
- First you set the shutter-speed with scroller wheel on the top of the camera. The you set the aperture value manual when pushing the "AV +/-" button and scrolling the same wheel. After this you can set the WB and ISO manual.

Congrats on the first place! ;)
